Practice Statement

Haworth Tompkins believe that model making is one of several ways to explore, explain and present ideas. It is useful for clients, the public and amongst ourselves, and it is fundamental to what we do.

At HT, Architects and assistants are encouraged to make both sketch and presentation models. Sketch models are a chance for teams to get the design out of the computer and see the details and forms they’re working on in real life. Additionally, changes to sketch models aren’t weighed down by the constraints of CAD. Furthermore, models respond to real life lighting conditions and larger models come up against construction constraints. Presentation models are a key method of communication to those
from outside of our world.

HT are privileged to have a dedicated model making area and workshop. It is a hub where people can stop by and make suggestions on both design and making technique; this fosters a collaborative atmosphere.
