Modelmaking is one of the integral tools in our studio for interrogating what’s really there and is central to our way of working. They may be made quite quickly or slowly, delicate or robust. It all depends on what we are communicating and who to.
An analogue process of making is not only intuitive to us; it helps us to understand how things fit together and change over time, and in turn to predict how our own work will fit into its context. Models can be made for any stage of the project: Research to show how time has changed a building; concepts as simple forms; planning models to clearly communicate to all stakeholders; and technical models during construction to coordinate between trades.
As a physical entity, models are an equitable manifestation of your idea. Whilst 3D visualisations offer you a prescribed, realistic moment in time and 2D drawings can, most of the time only, be understood by professionals, physical models allows you to communicate your ideas to everyone. Helping all to understand space, materials, light, connections etc in all planes, whether you are a member of the community, a client, a sub-contractor or another member of the design team.
